An Introduction To Bath Mozartfest

was born in Austria on 27th January 1756 and baptised the next day as Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. It was the feast of St John Chrysostom of Constantinople and an auspicious day for the human race, who had evolved sufficiently to produce one of the most talented composers the world has ever known!

The Bath MozartFest is a wonderful celebration of the music of Mozart, as well as that of his contemporaries, those who inspired him and the musicians he influenced. Set in beautiful Georgian venues which were built in his lifetime, it’s a wonderful way to explore the city. A leisurely breakfast at the hotel, a stroll across the old Georgian pleasure park at Sydney Gardens and along the beautiful Great Pulteney Street to this fine venue for a mid-morning concert is the order of the day. Kiev-born pianist Alexei Grynyuk plays a pair of solos sonatas by Mozart and German cellist Leonard Elschenbroich plays duo sonatas by Beethoven. When you’ve had your culture fix, there’s still plenty of time to explore everything Bath has to offer.

The grand finale for this year’s Mozartfest, the programme moves away from Mozart to Grieg, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky with the big orchestral concert of the week. It takes place at the wonderful art deco style Forum building in central Bath – quite different to our other Georgian venues. Hot from several very popular concerts at this year’s BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, BBC NOW (National Orchestra of Wales) will cross the Severn Bridge from their home in Cardiff to play before a Bath audience with a programme of familiar masterpieces, from the Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain King to Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique.
