Make Ullswater the place to be for your weekend getaway

09 September 2019

Ullswater is one of the most stunning and unspoilt areas of the Lake District, Cumbria. For centuries romantics and dreamers such as Wordsworth and Turner have been awe-inspired by its sheer beauty. If you observe the water’s reflection you will see Helvellyn, England’s third highest mountain, staring back at you and dominating the skyline. It's the ideal location for a weekend away from it all. You can be as energetic as you like. If you fancy an adventure fuelled break there is everything from fell walking to rock climbing and kayaking. If you are looking for a more sedate experience, try a historic steamer cruise on the lake and a tour round a historic stately home.

We’ve compiled some ideas to make the most of your weekend away in beautiful Ullswater.

Book into Macdonald Leeming House, one of the finest 4-star hotels in the Lake District, offering luxury and comfort in beautiful surroundings.

Set in 22 acres of beautiful grand gardens in the countryside of Cumbria, the 200-year-old country house hotel has breathtaking scenery and fine facilities.

Dogs are a huge part of many families so why not bring them with you? There is so much space for them to explore and have fun.

Located on the ground floor, our dog-friendly rooms open out on to the patio and gardens and allow for easy access.

Day 1 Friday

Arrive and relax in the hotel before dinner.

Experience award-winning dining amidst one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Lake District at the hotel’s Regency Restaurant, which holds one prestigious AA rosette, awarded for their classic British dishes, prepared with the freshest, seasonal ingredients.

Following dinner take a stroll around the hotel grounds and admire the beautiful views of Ullswater followed by a relaxing drink in the hotel bar.

Day 2 Saturday

The Regency Restaurant is also open for breakfast, where guests can begin the day with a traditional full English breakfast or enjoy the selection from the continental buffet.

Walk off the breakfast by tacking a Lakeland fell such as the nearby Little Mell Fell or the Great Mell Fell. If you were looking to spend the morning in a more relaxing manner, Lowther Castle is well worth a visit.

Seventy years on from its demolition, Lowther Castle is now one of the most intriguing visitor attractions in the country. Dramatic ruins and gardens within gardens so your four-legged friends can enjoy it too.

Once you’ve explored the castle and gardens, treat yourself to lunch in the café.

After lunch its time to head to the lake.

For the adventurous why not head to the hotel’s activity centre and try either sea kayaks or open canoes, and with guides by your side head off on a journey to explore Ullswater. The distance and pace will be tailored to your preferences on the day. Kayaking and canoeing are perfect for a relaxing experience and in one of the most beautiful areas of the UK. For those looking for a little more fun the day can also include a cliff jump, which takes place on the lake shore.

Alternatively, you can explore the lake on the historic Ullswater ‘Steamers’. The Steamers have been operating cruises here since 1859, the oldest vessel Lady of the Lake was built in 1877.

After a busy Saturday exploring, head back to the Regency restaurant for a delicious dinner.

Day 3 Sunday

After another delicious breakfast in the Regency restaurant we suggest a trip to Dalemain House and Gardens before beginning your journey home.

Dalemain is one of the most beautiful and impressive stately houses in the North West of England. The finely dressed pink stone of its Georgian façade glows magnificently in the sunlight.

It is also home to The World’s Original Marmalade Awards and you can sample hundreds of different varieties in the café and shop.
