As the summer sun casts itself upon the River Thames, there's no better way to spend a few days than by experiencing the magic of the Henley Regatta and our famous Macdonald hospitality. Whether you're a rowing enthusiast, a lover of luxury, or simply seeking a taste of English tradition, this iconic pairing promises an unforgettably elegant escape.

What is the Henley Regatta?

The Henley Royal Regatta is undoubtedly the best-known regatta in the world, combining elite sporting competition with traditional British social pageantry. This prestigious rowing event takes place on one of the most beautiful stretches of the River Thames, with Temple Island marking the starting point of the famous racing course.

The regatta follows a unique head-to-head knockout format, different from the multi-lane racing found at many international regattas. This creates intense, dramatic contests between crews as they race side by side down the iconic Henley reach. The event attracts both rowing enthusiasts and those simply wishing to enjoy a quintessential British summer experience.

Beyond the competitive aspect, Henley Royal Regatta also maintains a charitable dimension through the Henley Royal Regatta Charitable Trust. Established in 1988, the Trust provides funding to support young people still in education or training to participate in rowing or sculling, ensuring the continued legacy and future of this remarkable sport.

When is the Henley Regatta this Year?

The Henley Royal Regatta is surely one of the most esteemed events in the British sporting calendar. Established in 1839, it showcases world-class competitive rowing in a setting that is as sophisticated as it is historic.

This year the event takes place from the 1st to 6th July 2025, and will present over 400 races of international standard. Athletes will include a mix of seasoned Olympic rowers as well as debuts from fresh sporting talent.

For 2025, the regatta has introduced a significant development - a new Women's Intermediate event called "The Bridge Challenge Plate," reflecting the Regatta's ongoing commitment to gender parity. The name carries symbolic significance, both paying homage to the tradition of naming events after iconic landmarks on the Henley stretch and signifying the event's purpose to "bridge" the gap between different competitive levels.

Set to draw crowds of thousands throughout the week, this year's regatta will welcome visitors from around the globe. Expect an atmosphere of refined jubilation along the riverbanks, with everyone in their finest threads as they sip champagne and enjoy the exhilarating event in style.
