While the official Edinburgh International Festival concentrates on what some like to call "the high arts," the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival is more eclectic, developing out of a spontaneous, grass-roots response to the international high-flyers up the road. In 2006 the eclectic jamboree offered 28,014 performances of 1867 shows in 261 venues, with a total of 17,000 performers. Beat that!

One of the world's great arts festivals, the Edinburgh International Festival fills the Scottish capital with the finest classical music, opera, theatre and dance for three weeks at the end of every summer. With the many other festivals (the Military Tattoo, Fringe, Film, Jazz and Book), it makes Edinburgh the world's most exciting festival city during August. There's a new look for 2007 with a new director Australian Jonathan Mills taking over after Sir Brian McMaster's 15 years at the helm. An immediate change is adding two days to the beginning of the festival.

The "Windsor of the North", Alnwick Castle is the grand seat of the Duke of Northumberland, a medieval monolith built by the Norman Conquerors to keep the rowdy Scots in their place. In addition to boasting Robert Adam interiors and precious Old Master paintings by Titian, the landmark was also used as a location for two of the Harry Potter movies.
