The biggest fortification of the entire Roman empire, the wall defended the northern province of the Roman province of Britain from the marauding Northern savages. 73 miles long with 17 major garrisons along the way, it features a deep ditch cut on the northern side and a fort every mile - each close enough to the next so that troops could hear a trumpet call against the wind. There are many good vantage points for seeing the wall, and walking alongside it for as far as you choose. Even the full 73 miles!
