Cork

Attractions History & culture

Originally a montastic settlement, Cork was foundered as a trading port between 915 and 922 by Viking settlers.  Today it is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city offering a mix of culture and history alike.

Cork features architecturally notable buildings originating from the Medieval to Modern periods.  The Red Abbey offers a look at Medieval life while the two cathedrals; St Marys and Saint Fin Barre's are from a more modern period.

Other notable places include Elizabeth Fort, the Cork Opera House, Cork Public Museum and the English Market.  The Murphy's brewery in Ladies Well produces a variety of local lager, ales and stouts and the Franciscan Well brewery was recently awarded 'Best Microbrewery in Ireland' by Food and Wine Magazine.
