MIJAS - March to September
Every Wednesday: Weekly flamenco shows organised by the Town Hall at midday in the main square. Spectators are offered a free glass of Malaga wine.
Every Saturday from March to May: Free guided walks in the rural areas of the municipality, organised by the Mijas Visitors Department. The walks leave Mijas Town Hall at 10am and last for between 2 and 4 hours. The guides speak English.
April: Semana Santa (Easter week). The story of the Passion of Christ is told each day in the carefully prepared and rehearsed processions, when the narrow village streets come alive with history and tradition.
11 June Corpus Christi is celebrated in the traditional Spanish way, by covering the streets in rosemary. The village takes on a somewhat mediaeval air with the wonderful aroma of herbs and the overall traditional atmosphere. The procession is on the 14th June.
June: On the 13 & 14 the Town Hall organises the International Festival of Mijas. This multicultural festival gives all nationalities the chance to find out more about other nationalities and have a lot of fun in the process. People dress in traditional costume and there are stalls for each country, where you can buy traditional food and drink, presents and clothes, all accompanied by music and dance.
23 June The night of San Juan. Celebrations of the longest night and the beginning of summer are held in San Sebastian Street in the village and there is a spectacular fireworks display at midnight.
July & August: Flamenco Dance Festival in July. A Latin American night in August turns the village square into a South American dance festival. The Spanish Theatre Festival is also held in August in the Mijas open air theatre. There is also a Rock night in the village, with music for the young and the young at heart.
September: 2nd week - The annual Mijas Fair - a week long celebration, in honour of the patron saint of Mijas, the Virgin of the Rock. There is plenty of food and drink to sample, while watching the traditional Sevillana dancing. This is a great opportunity to see beautiful Spanish horses and a spectacular array of flamenco costumes. Tourist day: a festival offering a taste of tradition in the form of wine and dancing.
