The Shropshire branch of Macmillan Cancer Support has urged golfers to take part in a charity golf day led by former Open and Masters champion Sandy Lyle.

Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf and Spa in Tarporley Road, Whitchurch, is hosting the Sandy Lyle Golf Day on Tuesday, June 10.

All the proceeds will be shared between Macmillan Cancer Support in Shropshire and the neonatal unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Sara Thomas, Fundraising Manager in Shropshire for Macmillan Cancer Support, said everyone taking part would be helping local people.

"Every penny makes such a huge difference to peoples' lives and by supporting Macmillan, the golfers will be playing a significant role in improving the lives of people with cancer in Shropshire," she said.

"Macmillan helps by caring, listening, providing the right information about cancer at the right time. Sometimes we can offer financial help, because having cancer can bring extra costs such as hospital parking and travel expenses, extra heating and different clothes.

"Last year we gave more than £51,300 in Macmillan grants to people in Shropshire to help with some of these costs.

"We really appreciate the hotel's generosity and everyone involved in this fantastic golf day will know they will be making a difference to local people living with cancer."

After tucking into bacon rolls and coffee, Sandy Lyle will be driving off with each team of four on the first tee of the 18-hole competition.

A BBQ will be served at lunchtime and there will be a three-course presentation dinner in the Shropshire Suite in the evening when the amount raised for the charities will be unveiled.

Robert Elliot, Golf Sales Manager of Macdonald Hotels, said the hotel was delighted to be supporting two such worthy local causes.

"Macmillan Cancer Support and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital both help people often at a time when they need it most," he said.

"We have already had great interest from companies and it would be fantastic if we could attract even more golfers to fill the remaining places."
