England superstar Wayne Rooney is shooting a Cheshire golf resort onto national televisions screens – but don’t tell the green keeper.

The Manchester United striker was at The Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa to film the UK advert for computer game FIFA 2008.

Rooney, alongside Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, is shown practicing his golf swing on the driving range.

But Rooney is baited into showing off his football skills by other golfers and 12 people pile onto a pristine fairway for an impromptu challenge.

The £30 million star dribbles past the golfers tackles before blasting a ball into a golf basket 20 yards away.

The advert has featured on terrestrial and digital channels since the start of the month.

The FIFA football series, which is produced by EA Sports, is in its 15th consecutive year and the latest addition is topping the sports gaming charts across Europe.

Marcella Hammer, golf coordinator at the Macdonald Portal, said it was the first time Portal had dealt with such an event. She said: “It was a very surreal experience! A huge production company from Holland turned up with two world-class footballers and took over the course for a day.

They were quite secretive but every now and then they would pop in and ask for something, like a golf-buggy.

The reason they chose us was because a man from the production company had played at our course and recommended the location to his producers. They flew over and agreed that our greens were worthy of being on the television and rest is history.

FIFA also used the advert shoot to promote the 40-track music soundtrack that features within the game – taking photographs of the featured bands with Rooney or Ramos in front of the course.
