7th November 2008
Kind-hearted golfers hit the right notes for a Whitchurch charity at a golf event at a leading Shropshire venue.
Fifty-six men and women took part in the annual Am-Am tournament at Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf and Spa in Tarporley Road, Whitchurch.
The 18-hole competition raised around £400 for the Sir Edward German Music Festival which is held in the town.
Former policemen Neil Spencer, John Quinton, Les Hodges and Mike Keane finished in first place with a score of 58.1.
Members of Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf and Spa members Pat Crump, Linden Crump, Katherine Crump and Joe Miller used their local knowledge to good effect to scoop second place with 59.1.
Matthew Edwards, one of the professionals at the course, also proved home sweet home is best when he won his second professional title.
The Whitchurch-based player was the winner of the Pro-Am tournament with an impressive score of 67.
Jon Lomas was three shots behind in second place and Michael Welch was third with 71.
Jamie Minshall, of Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf and Spa, said 40 professionals had taken part in the Pro-Am contest which had been running for 20 years.
"Both competitions attracted a large field and the standard of the players was high," he said.
"Matthew won £200 for winning the Pro-Am which is his second success after he won a pro event in Manchester.
"It was great that the amateur players raised such a sizeable amount for the Sir Edward German Music Festival which brings a great deal of pleasure to people in the town as well as remembering one of the town's most famous sons."
