'The happiest combination of beauty and grandeur which any of
the Lakes affords' was how the poet William Wordsworth summed up
this beautiful place. Stay with us in our hotel in Ullswater to
really appreciate his words. The lake is eight miles long and best
appreciated on-board one of the steamers travelling up and down its
curved shape.
There are lakeshore walks aplenty, as well as sailing, fishing
and kayaking. Away from the lake, try pony-trekking and some of the
best walking in the Lakes. Nearby challenges include fells like
Helvellyn, the third highest mountain in the UK. Further lakeland
adventures can take in bushcraft lessons and other outdoorsy
skills.
On a more refined note, why not visit the stately home that
starred in TV's Jane Eyre. Dalemain House has a fascinating mix of
architecture and been inhabited by the same family since 1679. A
more recent arrival, The Lakeland Birds of Prey Centre, is where
you'll see eagles, hawks, falcons and owls put to work.
