On the River Douglas, this town in Greater Manchester has a
character all of its own. Stay in our hotel near to Wigan and get
acquainted. Of course, there's sport, particularly Rugby League and
the famous Wigan Warriors. They share a stadium with 'The Lactics',
nickname of Wigan Athletic Premier League football club.
There's plenty of entertainment off the pitch too. Wigan has a
vibrant local music scene whose roots go right back to the
legendary Wigan Casino, praised as the 'best disco in the world' in
the 70's. You can explore an even more distant history at a number
of places.
The Wigan Pier on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool canal is
one, named after George Orwell's famous book. The pier has a
heritage centre that displays an authentic slice of Lancashire
life, from school to factory, home to coal mine. The Wigan Pier
Theatre Company tells the fascinating story of the pier and life in
the mills. Nearby, the Trencherfield Mill has what's claimed to be
the world's largest working mill steam engine.
