England's most northern county is filled with ancient castles,
golden sandy beaches, rolling hills, rugged moorland, friendly
towns and villages. There's Kielder Water, Europe's largest
man-made lake, perfect for lovers of nature, water sports and other
outdoor activities.
On the coast, you'll find magnificent castles like Bamburgh
where history is still being uncovered daily. A mile off the coast
stands another castle, Lindisfarne on Holy Island. Alnick Gardens
always fascinates, a wonderland created by the Duchess of
Northumberland. It includes the notorious poison garden and one of
the largest treehouses in Europe.
Not to be outdone, Alnwick Castle had a starring role in the
Harry Potter films. The UK's largest world heritage site is found
here too: Hadrian's Wall. Built by the Romans to repel the peoples
of the north, you can walk alongside this enduring symbol of Rome's
influence.
