When you want to play where the pros go to get a challenging round in on a course designed by a former Ryder Cup player, follow Scottish professional golfer on the PGA EuroPro Tour John Gallagher's lead and head to Macdonald Cardrona Hotel Golf & Spa. "The 7th hole is an absolute hidden gem," he says, "but the whole course has a pretty epic background."

A round (or two, or three depending on how long your lunch break is) at Cardrona makes you feel like you've escaped much further than just 40 minutes from Edinburgh. Set amongst the beautiful Border Hills, along the River Tweed, this par 72 course is ideal for an avid golfer like Gallagher when he wants to get out of the city to enjoy a game in a more scenic setting. It's also a great place for amateurs to shed the intimidation factor and play on a course with undulating hills and terrific scenery.

Whether you're a professional or not, according to Gallagher, the beauty of the game is that you're always competing against yourself, trying to beat your last score. "So if you have a bad day you keep playing, you bounce back," words of wisdom for players of all levels. "I played Cardrona in 2007 on the EuroPro Tour, so I know the course and I enjoy coming back here to get a round in."

Right now Gallagher is certain that he's playing the best golf of his life. "I've been stronger, younger, a bit thinner, but you need to be in a good head space - that's so important. Right now I just want to keep getting better." We look forward to welcoming him, along with all golfers out there, to play at Macdonald Cardrona Golf Course. If the pros keep coming back to play - for fun or in competitions - then we feel confident saying it's worth a visit!
