The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield
The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers is the oldest club in the world. A British Open venue on many occasions, Muirfield is perhaps the fairest test of a golfer's ability to play links golf. Punishing rough awaits any errant shots but the best players will thrive. Numerous great holes, but the 10th, a 471 yard par four, is exceptional. In July 2013, Muirfield will stage the Open Championship for the sixteenth time.

Look out from the Marine Hotel and you will see the glorious, panoramic expanse of the West Links. An Open qualifying venue, West Links is one of the best and most scenic links courses in Scotland. It boasts views over the Isle of May, the islands of Fidra and Craigleith, the Bass Rock and across the Forth to Fife. The course is sprinkled with top-notch holes and rewards strategy and guile rather than power hitting. The par three 15th,'Redan', copied across the world, is 192 yards long with bunkers and sloping green protecting the pin.

Craigielaw is one of East Lothian's newest courses and it meets the challenging standards of its neighbours. Craigielaw golf course, practice facilities and clubhouse are perfect for visitor golf outings and corporate golf days. With challenging greens, cavernous bunkers and spectacular views over the Firth of Forth, Gullane Hill and out towards Edinburgh and Fife, Craigielaw Golf Club is an experience not to be missed. In March 2005, Eric Grandison, one of Europe's leading teaching professionals, opened the Eric Grandison Golf School.

Having played host to countless events in its rich history,Dunbar is rightly considered one of the great links of East Lothian and, indeed, Scottish golf. It has been and will again be used in 2013 as an Open Championship Final Qualifying venue and has also hosted a number of leading amateur competitions. Almost the entire course runs along a wonderful strip of land by the Firth of Forth, offering a lengthy, testing exposure to the kind of course on which the game of golf was born.

The stunning East Links in North Berwick combines inland turf with a seaside setting. Every hole offers the golfer a different perspective of the Firth of Forth, with views dominated by the Bass Rock. Elevated tees and greens across the course mean that careful club selection, consistency and confidence in iron play are vital. The Glen is perfect for accomplished players and novice golfers alike.

A stunning links playable all year round, Gullane 1 is an Open qualifying venue and has hosted many other championships. The course snakes across Gullane Hill from where views of East Lothian, Edinburgh and Fife are spectacular. Greens, fairways and bunkers are all superb and the course presents one of the best challenges in Scotland.

A favourite among locals, Gullane 2 hosted the 2002 Seniors Open Amateur Championship. The course runs down Gullane Hill towards the nature reserve at Aberlady Bay. Although this links has plenty of length it is the testing short holes that offer the greatest challenge.

Although shorter than its neighbours No.1 and 2, Gullane No. 3 is renowned for having the best greens on the club's courses. Crafty bunker placement and punitive rough mean imaginative shot-making and accuracy are at a premium. Gullane No.3 is great fun for all levels of golfers.

Among the courses lining the Forth estuary, Longniddry stands out for its mix of links and parkland. 6260 yards may not seem long but with no par 5's and eight 400+ yards par 4's, this is a stiff challenge. If the west wind blows you will be in no doubt why the course has been an Open qualifying venue.

Archerfield is a private member's golf club which prides itself on a lack of fussiness. Well-maintained courses and diverse countryside make Archerfield a delight to play. The Fidra Course combines a unique mix of pine forest with fast-running links. The Dirleton is a traditional Scottish links course with its sweeping fairways, deep, menacing bunkers and undulating dunes bordering the fairways.
