The Hall Today
In 1969, Linden had been classified a Grade II listed building of architectural importance which stipulated that 'every effort should be made to preserve it'.
In October 1978, Linden Hall was purchased by Callers-Pegasus Travel Service Ltd., a subsidiary of the long established Newcastle upon Tyne family company, A.B. Caller & Sons Ltd. founded in 1897. To Mr. Roy and Mr. Ian Caller, Linden Hall was ideally situated and the perfect structure for renovation and restoration into a first-class country hotel offering traditional comfort and service.
Linden Hall has certainly been tastefully restored to recapture the elegance and style of the original Georgian mansion preserving its finest architectural details especially in its larger classically proportioned rooms. Many of the original elements and details of the building have been beautifully restored and where modern materials and products have been used, their design has been carefully chosen to blend in with those of original date.
In 1985 further alterations were made to the hotel facilities by roofing over the stable courtyard to provide one large banqueting suite to complement the four suites already installed in the existing buildings around it.
At the original entrance to the courtyard, a dramatic yet sympathetic glazed entrance was incorporated.
The hotel banqueting suites are all named after the main family connections with Linden Hall, over its almost two centuries as a private house. These are Bigge, Ames, Adamson, Liddell and Stamfordham.
In 1982 Linden Hall Hotel was given a Civic Trust commendation for its conversion design and in 1983 an Riba Architecture Award.
Continuous improvements and additions have been made to the Hall in recent years. In January 1993 Jennifer Robson, President of Northumbria Tourist Board, opened the latest extension which consisted of a ground floor wing containing ten extra luxury bedrooms around their own courtyard, new executive offices and a Health and Beauty Spa incorporating a fine indoor heated swimming pool, spa bath, steam room, solarium and fitness centre. A wide range of beauty treatments are available from the fully qualified therapists.
1992 saw the purchase of 150 adjoining acres to the east of the Estate, which meant that the Hall was now positioned in the heart of 450 acres of Northumbrian Countryside.
In 1994 construction commenced of the Linden Acres luxury housing development in the estate grounds. This exclusive estate consists of 17 individually designed homes, built in stone to an extremely high standard.
The Caller Family and their Companies have been great supporters and sponsors of sport in the North East. It was therefore fitting that 1997, their Centenary Year as a Company, saw the opening of the superb Linden Hall Golf Course. The 18 hole course designed to the highest specification by Jonathan Gaunt; completely surround the Hall and has a feeling of great serenity. It has won universal acclaim since its opening and is sited on a mixture of mature woodland, early 19th century parkland and rolling countryside. Water is much in evidence, with 10 holes featuring established burns and ponds, as well as new lakes which have been designed with sensitivity to match the peaceful surroundings.
There are four tees on every hole to suit all golfers. The course measures 6809 yards from the medal tees (par 72), 6486 yards from the standard tees, 6100 yards from the forward tees and 5530 yards from the Ladies tees.
A new purpose built development close to the 1st tee incorporates the Golf Club Office, Professional's Shop and full Ladies and Gentlemens changing facilities.
Linden Hall Golf Club includes the benefits of a driving range, a full specification putting green and a chipping/bunker practice area.
To coincide with the opening of the Golf Club, the Linden Pub has been refurbished and much extended to include a conservatory within the courtyard, and an additional bar on the first floor. The Pub has been renamed The Linden Tree Bar & Grill and provides a warm welcome in friendly surroundings to hotel guests, casual visitors and golfers.
Today Linden Hall is owned and operated by Macdonald Hotels Ltd, who purchased the estate from the Caller family in December 2002.
