International Cannabinoid Society Won Over By Highland Hospitality

8th August 2008

It was the spectacular scenery and excellent range of conference facilities which sold the Aviemore Highland Resort to the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS) as the perfect location for their 2008 conference.

The fact that delegates could be accommodated on the resort, within walking distance of the conference and with a wide range of social facilities on their doorstep, casted the deciding vote.

Tasked with organising the annual event were Prof Ruth Ross and Julie Whyte, from the University of Aberdeen, who said, "The conference itself was no small event, with around 350 international doctors, scientists and representatives from pharmaceutical companies arriving from across the globe to both Aberdeen and Inverness airports.

"The logistics of having this many delegates arriving in different places could have proved to be a headache; however the efficient shuttle services provided by local coach firms which whisked delegates off to the resort combined with the efficient check-in service at the resort ensured an effortless experience for all."

On the first evening of the conference, delegates were treated to a welcome reception courtesy of The Highland Council. They also had the opportunity to ride in a funicular train up to the peak of the Cairngorm Mountain where they were treated to a delicious Scottish-themed buffet at the award-winning Ptarmigan restaurant.

Julie continues, "The trip up the Cairngorm Mountain proved to be one of the highlights of the whole event as delegates praised the stunning views and excellent meal.

"Other social events during the meeting included beer and whisky tasting and in true traditional Scottish form, a ceilidh. On the final night of the conference was a banquet dinner where delegates were given the celebrity treatment as Spud the Piper, famous for piping at Madonna's wedding, played as a Highland dancer performed.

"The Highland Resort was extremely accommodating in all aspects of the conference from the planning stages right through to the actual event" praises Julie, "No matter what the query, the venue staff were always very friendly, professional and helpful."

According to Professor Roger Pertwee, president of the ICRS, "The Highland Resort proved to be one of best venues that the Society has ever had for its annual international meeting, providing as it did a superb lecture theatre, an excellent selection of rooms for poster sessions and break-out meetings, friendly helpful efficient staff, wonderful food and accommodation and tranquil scenic surroundings".

Jason Schechter from the ICRS, who dealt with the Audio Visuals for the conference, adds, "The Aviemore Highland Resort should be proud to offer one of the finest theatres. It's capable of comfortably seating over 600 delegates and the presentation hall has all the kit necessary to provide brilliant digital projection, clear, live acoustics and concert quality sound delivery."
