Duke of Edinburgh's Award
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a UK charity dedicated to the development of young people. It motivates over 250,000 young people from all backgrounds to spend their free time doing something positive: volunteering to help others, learning new skills, getting fit and undertaking expeditions designed to test them to the limit. This has an enormous impact on their attitudes and capabilities, and can transform some young people's lives.
The Award helps young people to develop skills and qualities that are often not taught through formal education, including confidence and self-esteem, initiative, leadership, team-working and tolerance of others. It helps young people learn more about themselves and their communities and proves to the world they can take on a real challenge and succeed.
The Award touches everyone's lives: community groups that are helped by young volunteers; parents who see their child growing and developing; and youth workers who use the Award to re-engage disconnected young people. It has an enormous impact on those who take part and demand continues to grow year on year.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award and Macdonald Hotels are passionate about giving young people the chance to achieve, regardless of background, ability or any other barriers. Macdonald Hotels have worked in partnership with the Award since 1999, both supporting the charity financially and by providing prizes, event, banqueting and residential facilities.
