  Fishing at Macdonald Cardrona Hotel

  Horsbrugh Salmon Fishing

  Cardrona now has exclusive fishing rights to the north bank of this productive upper Tweed beat. Set in a very scenic area of countryside, the beat is 2.5 miles long with 11 named pools. The area is full of wildlife with a few 'resident fishermen', namely kingfishers, otters and herons.

  The River Tweed is the second longest river in Scotland and has runs of salmon and sea trout from the start of the season on 1st February, right through until the end of the season on 30th November. More Tweed salmon are caught each year on the fly than any other river in Britain. The majority of fish enter the river in the autumn on their journey upstream to spawn and it's because of these late running fish that the Tweed has an extension to its season, allowing fishing until the end of November. The upper Tweed is predominantly an autumn fishery and at times can fish just as well if not better than some of the very expensive well-known lower beats.

  The best time to fish the Horsbrugh beat is during the months of October and November, although given the right conditions ie wet weather; early running fish can occasionally be caught before then. The autumn running fish can be quite large (15-30lbs) and often don't hang about long in the lower water in their quest for the spawning grounds in the tributaries and head waters of the upper river. This at times can result in hundreds of fish passing through the beat on a daily basis, giving an excellent chance of hooking into a 'fish of a lifetime.'

  Fishing methods and tackle are fairly traditional. Spinning is permitted from 15th February until 14th September. Fly only is allowed from 15th September. In low water conditions a 12ft double handed rod with a floating or intermediate line is ideal. In higher water conditions, a 14ft rod with a medium sink or fast sink tip line is better. Size of flies can vary dramatically with water height and temperature but generally the use of smaller flies (size 10 or 12 double or ½ inch tube) in low water and larger flies (size 6 or 4 double or 1½ to 2 inch tube) in higher colder water is the norm. The most popular for autumn fishing tend to be in shades of orange, yellow, red or black with Ally's Shrimp, Cascade Shrimp, Garry Dog, Willie Gunn, Comet, Stoats Tail and Junction Shrimp all proving popular. Be prepared to experiment with size and colour and if having no success with bright flies, give a darker pattern a try.
